Schrijven is een roeping. Een oefening-baart-kunst. Het kost soms inkt, zweet en tranen ... Maar je wilt blijven schrijven. Dat voel je in hart, hand en nieren.
Zo voelt het ook voor bestsellerauteur Stephen King. En daarom schreef hij het boek On Writing. Over de kunst en kronkels van het schrijver zijn. Heel eerlijk. Heel echt. En ongelooflijk inspirerend. 1. Schrijf voor een luie lezer

Hebt u een idee? Splits het op in twee. Dan kan uw lezer beter mee. Hou uw gedachtegang helder en simpel. Zet snel genoeg een (extra) punt. En trakteer hem op een heerlijk frisse tekst – geserveerd op zijn luie schoot. Zo zakt hij dieper in zijn stoel – en in uw boodschap of verhaal.
2. Schrap pareltjes zonder meerwaarde
Try any goddamn thing you like, no matter how boringly normal or outrageous. If it works, fine. If it doesn't, toss it. Toss it even if you love it. ... Murder your darlings.
Leer en experimenteer. Schrijf pareltjes – en gooi ze voor de zwijnen. Want voedert u woordkunstjes zonder meerwaarde? Dan zakt uw lezer weg. Schrijf dus in functie van uw lezer en schrap overbodige krulletjes. Maar hou uw parels zeker bij – ter inspiratie, of om een andere tekst mee op te blinken.
3. Schrijf voor uw ideale lezer
Someone – I can't remember who, for the life of me – once wrote that all novels are really letters aimed at one person. As it happens, I believe this. I think that every novelist has a single ideal reader; that at various points during the composition of a story, the writer is thinking, "I wonder what he/she will think when he/she reads this part?"
Krijgt u geen zin op papier? Schrijf dan voor één ideale lezer – van vlees en bloed: uw lief, uw oma of uw buurman. Palmt u uw uitverkoren lezer in? Dan voelt het ook voor iedere lezer alsof u de tekst speciaal voor hém schreef.
4. Gebruik de magische formule
Om af te sluiten, krijgt u nog deze magische formule mee:
Formula: 2nd draft = 1st draft - 10%. What the Formula taught me is that every story and novel is collapsible to some degree. If you can't get out ten per cent of it while retaining the basic story and flavor, you're not trying very hard.
